Step 8:

At last! Hollowing completed.

Now all that remains is endless hours of sanding on the inside, turning away the area where the face plate is fastened, and trimming around the top of the piece. Eventually I ended up with the piece fastened at the bottom with a tenon into a chuck and the top held by the tailstock. Then I applied finish (lacquer) and hand sanded/buffed the exterior. Finally, I removed the tenon and finished the bottom. The last step was to turn the bangles, dye them, and lace the top edge and apply the bangles. The piece was finally finished on April 12, 2010.

The title came about from the fact that this piece took longer to finish than any other that I have ever made. And I had more trouble with it than any other. Not only did I have to make extensive modifications to the lathe to accommodate the piece, but breaking the spindle was something I never experienced and hope never to repeat. Yet I was determined to finish the piece. You might say I was beguiled by it, even tho I was deviled by all the problems. Hence, “Beguiled by the Devil.”
